If you have a business and have been setting up any type of web content for it then you’ve probably heard the phrase SEO once or twice. When people use the internet they use search engines to find everything. Search engines are essentially giant filing cabinets full of all the different web pages on the internet. As you can imagine there’s quite a lot of those and your website can easily get lost in the crowd. SEO is a way to make sure this doesn’t happen.

What Is SEO?

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimisation and it’s super important if you want to get your business’ website seen.  Search Engine Optimisation is the practice of increasing or growing the traffic to your website. This is done by targeting natural traffic as opposed to direct traffic. Natural traffic can occur through different types of searches and SEO is all about making sure your business will appear in one of these searches.

 

Why Is SEO Important?

When people use search engines, hundreds and thousands of results will come up, but people are only ever really going to click on a result on the first few pages. Therefore your website must be on one of those first result pages where more people can see it.

SEO differs from paid advertisements. Payable advertisements target people and try to draw them in. They also cost money to keep up and aren’t guaranteed to work as you intended. SEO doesn’t target people and instead focuses on something called natural or organic traffic.

Natural traffic is gained when people find your website on their own accord, usually because you have appeared in a search. You’ll only appear in searches if your website contains relevant information to their searches so you will need to stay one step ahead.

 

How Does SEO Work?

When people search the internet it is usually because they have a problem that needs solving or a question that needs answering. If you want to be found, then you need to answer these questions and solve these problems before they ask. This way, when they come to find the answers, their searches can lead them straight to you.

You can also search for something on Google and then look at the ‘people also ask’ section to see what else people might be looking for.

For example, let’s say you sell coffee, you would research what other people are asking about coffee. When writing about your company make sure to explain simply and clearly who you are and what you do. Always be answering a question or solving a problem that a potential customer has. The content is incredibly important for your website doing well but there are other important factors to think about as well.

You need to make sure the reader has a good experience on your website. This means not only does the content have to be engaging and informative, but the website itself has to be enjoyable. Make sure the website runs smoothly, isn’t too slow and cluttered, and make sure that it is accessible to everyone.

There are other ways to fill your page with keywords and phrases. Make sure your page has a meta description that clearly outlines what the page is about. Try to use the full keyword in the slug after the URL as well. If you have images on your page be sure to clearly state what the image is of. This way you can include more keywords and also make your website more accessible to visually impaired people who use a screen reader.

You can also link other pages to your blogs. If you have a great article that’s relevant to what you’re writing about, don’t be afraid to put a link on the page. Anything that can help the reader discover more about you and your business is a big help.

Important to Remember?

Even though you are using your keywords and phrases to make sure you appear in searches, remember your customer probably isn’t as familiar with the topic as you are. Be sure to use broad terms that they are more likely to search for, the public may not use industry terms as you do and wouldn’t know to search for them.

Always end with a call to action. Provide links to your social media and make sure that the reader can contact you if they have a question.
