How Much Time Should You Spend On Core Web Vitals As A Small Business?

As of mid-June, Google is going to start the rollout of a new algorithm update, which will prioritise page experience as an important ranking factor. If you want web users to have an enjoyable experience when on your website, you need to be focusing on your websites core web vitals.

However, knowing how much time to spend on core web vitals is tricky. As a small business owner or manager, we know that your time is valuable. And making improvements to your website can be a challenging and time-consuming task.

In this blog, we’re going to share our advice on how much time you should spend on core web vitals. But before we get into that, let’s have a quick recap of why core web vitals are so important.

What Are Core Web Vitals & Why Are They Important?

As of June, core web vitals are going to be one of several ranking signals that helps Google determine where your website should rank on the search engine results page.

Core web vitals are part of Google’s page experience signals, along with Mobile-friendliness, Safe-browsing, HTTPS-security and Intrusive interstitial guidelines.

And according to Google, there are three core web vitals relating to the speed, responsiveness and visual stability of your website. These are:

  • Largest contentful paint (LCP)
  • First input delay (FID)
  • Cumulative layout shift (CLS)

With this update, Google is aiming to improve the experience for the web user. So, if your website is slow to load, doesn’t work well on a mobile, takes a long time to become interactive or has unstable features and elements – you may find your website slipping down the rankings. And nobody wants that!

To ensure your website continues to rank well for your keywords, you may need to make changes to the core web vitals to meet Google’s expectations.

How Long Should I Spend On Core Web Vitals?

Unfortunately, I know nothing about your business, your website or your skillset. So, I can’t say exactly how much time you should be spending on core web vitals.

The truth is, it depends on several factors, including the size of your website, the templates used to build your website and the purpose of your website (e-commerce websites will differ from a regular business website).

Making even the smallest of changes to a website can be time-consuming. Not only do you have to know how to implement the change, but you then have to test it. And test it again. And tweak it until it is right.

But before you start making changes to your website, you first need to check whether your website actually needs changing.

At GrowTraffic, we are always harping on about how a website is an evolving, ever-changing project. And to stay on top of the SEO game, it’s important that your website is regularly updated.

However, when it comes to core web vitals, your website may not need many changes at all. There are a couple of tests you can carry out to check.

Do I Need To Make Changes To My Website?

Let’s take website speed, for example….Using a website such as WebPageTest, you can test the speed of your website and get an insight into the largest and slowest loading files embedded within your site.

If your website is taking less than 2.5 seconds to load, Google will consider it a fast website and you won’t have to spend time on that particular core web vital.

If your website is taking longer than 2.5 seconds but less than 5.5 seconds, a little bit of work is required. And if your website is taking longer than 5-6 seconds to load… you’ve got a lot of work to do.

To gain an insight into all three core web vitals, you can use the Core Web Vitals Report tool on Google Search Console. This will provide an outline of which core web vitals need improving to give your website a better chance of ranking.
