SEO Agency 101: How Agencies Tailor Solutions To Your Needs

As mentioned in a previous blog, choosing an SEO agency can be difficult when there is so much choice, and what appears to be little difference between what they all say.

One thing you may have noticed is most agencies offer bespoke or custom packages and talk about SEO not being an ‘off the shelf’ service. Well, this is true and that’s what we’re talking about today – the need for agencies to tailor solutions to your needs.

Why Does SEO Need To Be Tailor Made?

Short and easy answer – because every client is different, will have different goals, and place a different level of importance on certain metrics.

Whilst it’s our job to convince clients what we think is most important and what we should work on first or what is achievable, that needs to be balanced with what metrics are being used client side and what benchmarks are important in board meetings.

The tailor-made part comes in because the methods we use to help each client reach their goals are different almost every time.

At GrowTraffic we use a variety of methods to help clients reach their goals. These methods will vary depending on the current state of your website, the content on the website, what industry you operate in, and a million other tiny factors! The length of time it can take to achieve your goals also depends on a few factors. How competitive is your industry, or how much do you want to budget for SEO, for example?

Goals and budget are the two main factors that help us decide what SEO strategy will help you meet your business needs.

Let’s look a little closer at how we approach these two areas.

SEO Goals

Clients come to us with a variety of different goals, and sometimes, we have to help reset the goals. For example, if they are extremely unrealistic.

Some of the goals you might approach an SEO agency with are…

“I want to be number one on Google”

“I want to increase web traffic”

“I want to increase sales”

“I want more people to download content”

“I want more people to phone/email/contact us”

“I want to find new target markets”

“I want to do better than our competitor”

“I want to increase awareness of who we are/what we do”

All perfectly reasonable goals and all things we help customers with every day. Even if you want to put some metrics on the goals and say something like “I need two people per month to book an appointment through our website for us to be successful”.

The more specific your goals, we can gain a better understanding of what you want to achieve, what we need to do to get you there, and how long/how much it will likely cost.

SEO Budget

How much you want to spend on SEO is tightly linked to your goals, and how long it will take to achieve them. That is absolutely not SEO agencies, or us trying to squeeze more money out of you. On our part, it’s just super honest to be upfront about how your budget compares to what you want to achieve.

We don’t believe it’s ethical to tell you we can achieve something if the budget isn’t there. Here is how we approach budgeting.

  • You tell us what we want to achieve and your goals
  • We take a deep dive into your website, the industry, your competitors, keywords etc
  • We come back to you with an estimate of how long we think your goal will take, how we’re going to approach it, and how much it will cost.

You then say yes and sign a contract. However, sometimes your budget might not align with what you want to achieve. This is why we usually offer several different proposals with different budgets and timelines. For example, if you want to reach your goal in 12 months, we’ll give you an estimated cost for that, but we will also provide a cost to achieve that goal in two years, or even three.

Tailored SEO Strategies

With your goals set, and a budget, we can work out how we are going to help you achieve what you want. What work we’re actually going to carry out.

At GrowTraffic, we tend to use a content marketing strategy for a lot of our clients as we find it to be one of the most reliable methods of creating sustainable growth for your website. This isn’t suitable for every client though and we often use a combination of techniques.

For example, we wouldn’t focus on content if your website needs a lot of work first – we may spend the first few months of our partnership working on technical SEO and on-page optimisation.

The important part is that we tell you exactly what we’re going to do, and keep you updated along the way. An area where a lot of SEO agencies sometimes fall short. Particularly if we’re doing a lot of ‘background work’ that isn’t necessarily visible – we still say what we’ve done, why it’s important and how it contributes to your overall strategy.

How Long Is A Piece Of String?

This phrase is something you will often see in SEO or from agencies. Especially if you’re asking, ‘How long/much will it cost for me to achieve X, Y, Z”. This isn’t us trying to be shady…as you can see from above, there are so many variables, that to give you an accurate answer, we need to do a little bit of digging and research. It’s us being sure of what we’re saying before we commit to an answer!

Anyways, hopefully, that’s explained how and why SEO agencies tailor their solutions as standard. If you have any questions or want to get started unravelling your piece of string, don’t hesitate to contact us.
