1) Pick Your Keyword

Choose a keyword that you know has a reasonably high search volume and answers a question. Your SEO agent should be able to give you advice around this area.

Often, the keyword you think people will search for isn’t what they are searching for at all, and is industry jargon. And optimising a blog for a keyword with low search volume is not going to be very effective. So making sure the keyword has a good search volume is crucial.

The keyword should be put in the title of the blog, and peppered throughout the copy. It is especially important to put the keyword in the first paragraph, especially if your blog title asks a question.

2) Up The Word Count

Most search engines like pages with more than 300 words on them as an absolute minimum. Make sure that your blog posts are at least 500 words to maximise your chances of ranking.

But don’t feel that you need to have large chunks of text. You can easily use subheadings and images to break it up a bit.

3) Add Some Subheadings

Break your blog up into smaller chunks by having plenty of subheadings (make sure they are formatted as ‘Heading 2’). You should include your keyword in at least a few of these subheadings, and as long as they are formatted as H2, they will help your page to rank.

Although it goes against everything you were taught in school, short paragraphs of one or two sentences look better on blogs than longer, full paragraphs because it encourages people to keep reading. Plus, on mobile phones, which is how most of us regularly view content, long paragraphs look extremely long and offputting.

4) Tick The Backend Boxes

Make sure you have filled in all the SEO elements when you upload the blog. It is your best chance of getting your blog to rank and is so important. The focus keyword, meta description, and image alt text should all be in place and should all include your keyword.

5) Write About Something Interesting

We mean this in the nicest possible way, but your business is only really interesting to you. But how your business help people is interesting. Don’t feel you need to write your blog about the internal workings of your business. Think more broadly about what else your customers might be interested in.

For example, imagine that you sell teapots. How the teapots are designed, made, and sold is not particularly interesting to a person who buys the teapot. Instead, consider what else that person might be interested in. Such as different types of tea, tea ceremonies around the world, how to throw a tea party, tea tasting notes, etc.

By broadening out your content, you will be reaching a broader audience and keeping them engaged.
