What Does Buying Links Mean?

If you have ever dipped your toes into the waters or SEO and Digital Marketing, you may have come across articles talking about buying links and backlinks, but what does buying links mean?

The SEO Holy Grail

Or one of the Holy Grails, anyway, is to have a link from a hugely successful website pointing back to your website.

You can imagine the traffic that this would generate and how the traffic could improve your Google rankings and turn into conversions.

Now, unless you are very lucky or happen to be friends with the editor of The Guardian, this process is going to take time, if you do it organically.

Have a look at the process below and then you will see why many companies are tempted by the idea of buying backlinks

The Backlink Process

In order to generate a backlink, first, you need to create something to link to.

This means original quality content, which takes time to create.

Next, you have to do some research to see who to approach for a backlink, this kind of business relationship building takes time.

If you do find a company who are interested, they may want you to create more quality content.

Then, if your content is approved and a backlink is created, you then have to wait and see what happens.

One of the things GrowTraffic like about digital marketing is there is no limit (no no, no no no no, no no no no, no no there’s no limit) to how long, or short it takes for a strand of marketing to work, or not.

Even a backlink from a hugely popular doesn’t guarantee anything at all. Even if it does pay off, there is no formula to say exactly when it will happen.

There are lots of different types of backlinks available, profile links, comment links, forum links, contextual links and many more!

A quick google search will show you there is still a plethora of backlinks sales websites out there and people who even sell links from PBN (private blog networks)

So, if a marketing agency happens to see an offer from a company which is willing to let them buy links, then why would they bother to go all through that hard work?

Cutting Corners Is A Risky Business

Last week we gave our two penneth worth on whether buying backlinks is a good idea, TL; DR Nope.

But we are leaning against an open door with this one, there are countless companies you can buy backlinks from.

You pay them a fee (more on how even this is a risky business below) and they give you a backlink.

Now, you may be lucky, and you may end up getting a good backlink, eventually. But like we said earlier, it isn’t a magical money generator.

Oh, and if Google finds out you will be in big trouble.

It might work, you might not get caught and it might work.

It might.

On the other hand, you could find yourself with a big hole in your budget and you get caught by Google who will make sure your rankings fall down quicker than Wile E Coyote when Roadrunner has tricked him off the edge of a cliff.

You don’t just have to take our word for it, the excellent Neil Gotch from GotchSeo.com has this to say.

Beware Of Backlink Scams

As we were writing this, news reached us of a new and alarming scam which appears to have surfaced.

Aleyda Solis (@aleyda) published these tweets a couple of days ago about a company claiming Aleyda had used their image in an article and she needed to link back to credit the image.

Take a look at these:

Then it gets curiouser and curiouser…

Interestingly enough, this generated a fair few replies from people who have experienced a similar situation.

Which had the effect of bringing it to the attention of Google’s John Mueller (@JohnMu), who is now looking to investigate how Google deals with this type of issue.
