If you are thinking of using a digital marketing strategy, then content marketing will play an important role, but what type of content does a content marketing agency produce?

Written Content Marketing

This covers a wide remit of activity so let’s cover the bulk of what would be written content marketing.

Blogs

Everyone knows what blogs are, but not everyone knows how important they can be to get traffic to a company’s website.

Just under 80% of businesses that have used blogs as a strand of their digital marketing strategy said they had got customers because of good blogging.

The other added benefit of blogging is it is relatively cheap to do.

How-To-Guides

People want to know how to do stuff and a how-to-guide is a very popular way of sharing the information.

This is why you see so many in the newspapers, where they call it service journalism.

How to cook Italian with Nigella, how to holiday in the Brecon Beacons, how to get the best from your streaming services, the list is endless.

If you think about it, a how-to-guide notices a problem, like I can’t cook Italian food or how on earth do I find something to watch on Amazon Prime and solves it.

White Papers

This type of content is *cue serious Wikipedia voice*:

“A white paper is an authoritative report or guide which informs readers concisely about a complex issue and presents the issuing body’s philosophy on the matter. It is meant to help readers understand an issue, solve a problem, or make a decision.”

If this description seems a bit dry then it’s because white papers are generally, a bit dry.

Because they have to be so concise, they have to explain every aspect of the subject, including all the technical information along with rules, regulations, they won’t be as thrilling or as enjoyable as a how-to- guide or a video.

But, nonetheless, they are a crucial part of content marketing and it is important they are done correctly and in a way that people will actually read them.

Coschedule have put together this handy white paper template, if you want help with creating one or would like to see how much work is involved.

Trend Reports

Often know as market analysis, trend reports are ways of collecting data, presenting it in a report or/and a graph and looking for trends or patterns.

Because they involve the use of numbers, maths and usually spreadsheet, they can seem alien to some creative people.

There is an excellent easy to read guide on creating a trend report by penthepad.com here. (See what we meant about how-to-guides…)

News Articles

News articles are a more comprehensive type of article where every aspect of the subject needs to be covered.

In journalism, or for research papers, they start by using use the 5 W’s:

Who, What, Where, Why, When.

As you can see, news articles will involve a lot more research than a standard blog and will almost always be a lot longer too.

Multimedia Content

This type of content is increasingly popular, in an age where we scroll on our phones from when we wake up until we go to sleep, content has to appear more tempting for people to look at.

If you post a how-to-guide article and a how-to-guide video, you will gain the attention of more clicks.

This started to be more popular on Facebook, where the chances of clicking a link to traditional blog or article are significantly less than pressing play on a 3-minute video.

But now video content is at the top of google search results. So, whether it is a news video, new Lady Gaga video or a Guide To Getting The Back Off A Bloody Amazon Firestick Remote, visual content is going to be a winner.

Trends are changing all the time, so it’s a good idea to not get set in your ways.

For example, anyone with kids will have noticed online tutorials and unboxing videos are incredibly popular right now.

But tutorials and unboxing videos may not be as popular in 2020, so it’s important to keep up to date with trends.

Podcasts are also far more popular today than they were a few years ago. Being able to listen to content while you are cooking, driving, working, means a lot more content is being consumed.

In a change from the usual ‘man in a t-shirt that either looks too tight or a bit weird giving advice’, here is a cool guide to starting podcasts from an actual woman.

Interactive Content is also a good idea, any content which gets people involved is a good way to gain attention, online quizzes, caption competitions and much more.
